The problem

If you try to convert to a virtual machine a windows based computer where a raid on a Intel Rapid Storage controller is running, the convertion will fail.
This happen because on the virtual machine will not be present a compatible controller.

The solution

The solution to this problem is a little bit tricky, but no complicated.
  1. Convert the computer using the VMware standalone converter.
After conversion the machine will not be able to boot.
  2. Run the converted virtual machine again until it boot in System restore mode.
  3. On the system restore  menu run the command line console and delete the followin files.
    • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\IAStor.sys
    • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\IAStorV.sys
  4. Shutdown the virtual machine.
  5. Now from inside the VMware standalone converter reconfigure the virtual machine
  6. Power on the new virtual machine and it should now be able to run.
